We are at first drawn to the subject's contemplative gaze, but the skillful composition keeps our eye circling up his arm, down his hand, and back around again. With a plethora of warm and cool hues, the plaid shirt provides further interest and vibrancy to the work while also complementing the skin tones, providing a perfect 'frame' for the face. The artist's use of soft & hard edges further aids the eye toward the focal point and reminds us that we are still viewing a painting though we patiently await the young man's next breath." |
