Jeff Carpenter http://jcarpenterstudio.com jeff@jcarpenterstudio.com "Boxing Day" oil & mastic on aluminum 19" x 48" NFS Kudos from Peter Trippi: "First, this is a marvelous match of medium and subject… the application of the reflective materials of oil, mastic, and aluminum to record so brilliant a scene is inspired. Yet the artist also knows how to manipulate his materials to modulate the coloring (e.g., for shadows), leading to a quasi-abstract composition that reminds us of Hopper-but not quite-then of Currier & Ives-but not quite. Rather than a sentimental scene of nostalgic Victorian piles, we get a slightly melancholic vista, without the tiresome foreboding Hopper conveyed. Note the adept contrast of firm lines along the roof at left, vs. the feathery marks that make up the tree branches… Hard to achieve in these materials!" |
