Alison Kuo
"Silence Please"
watercolor on paper
22" x 30"
Kudos from Peter Trippi: "This artist really knows how to draw in watercolors… the figures almost pop off the sheet, yet by making them hover over flat white (?) emptiness, they are simultaneously strengthened in effect, and also removed from a needlessly diverting real-world context. Of course, we all want to know 'what is happening here?', but the deletion of an environment disarms us, refocusing us on the universality of the predicament and the human beings here, even if we wouldn't normally care about them. This image taps into Chelsea's vogue for ironic ambiguity, without forgetting that most viewers also want to admire technical virtuosity."
